The Secret to Keeping Your Sweaters Looking Brand New

When the heat and humidity of summer has finally retreated and the crisp, chilly air of fall has arrived, is there anything more exciting than reaching for your favorite sweater again? Wrapping yourself in a cozy sweater can feel like visiting an old friend year after year. With proper care, your knits can last through many wears and seasons. Here are some suggestions to make them last as long as possible.

  1. Remove pills regularly.

It happens to all sweaters. Wherever there is friction, think armpits, elbows and on the sides, pills will follow. But don’t worry! They’re easily removed. Lay flat and gently brush with the Sweater Comb by the Laundress. Just make sure you keep up with it and don’t pull too hard!

2. Consider wearing a t-shirt underneath.

Everything from sweat, deodorant perfume and body oils affects the longevity of your knits. Wearing a t-shirt underneath creates a barrier between the knit and the skin, making it easier to go another wear without washing.

3. Don’t hang your sweaters.

Although it’s tempting to make it easier to see your options by quickly sorting through your rack, hanging your sweaters can lead to stretching and those unattractive peaks in the shoulders. Lay sweaters down flat for best results, but if you absolutely MUST hang them, fold the sweater and let drape over the bar of the hanger.

4. Use a gentle detergent.

Aside from the detrimental affects of dry cleaning on the environment, it also strips your knits of the natural oils they need to remain soft and supple. The Laundress has specially formulated detergents that were designed to keep your sweaters looking their best without the need for dry cleaning. Don’t let the name fool you, their Wool & Cashmere Shampoo can be used on everything from merino and mohair to cotton blends.
