How To Prep Your Skin For All-Day Makeup
Let’s get right to the point. Great makeup starts with your skin. Has a friend ever shared with you their favorite foundation, but when you gave it a try, it didn’t look at all the way you hoped? It’s not that it’s a bad product, it’s that that particular product doesn’t work for your skin type or it could be simply that you need to exfoliate and moisturize. Have you ever done your makeup in the morning for an all day event, but by the time evening rolls around, all your hard work is gone? There are many factors here, but let’s delve into the most important one: skin prep. The best part? Most of these are things you should already be doing on a regular basis anyway!
Start with a cleansed face. We’re not talking just splashing water on your face. Use your favorite cleanser to remove dirt and oils and pat your skin dry.
Next, exfoliate. I’m always surprised by how many people leave this step out, when it’s my absolute favorite! There are so many benefits to exfoliation, but in the case, the most important is alleviating dry patches. This will make sure your product applies more evenly. Some multi-purpose cleansers, like One Love Organics Botanical A, might even take care of this step for you. Make sure to do both your face and your lips. Your lip color will last so much longer! A lip scrub is great to have on hand for once a week use. You’ll avoid dry, cracked lips!
Now time for moisturizing! By now, everyone knows our all-time favorite moisturizing product is the Skin Dew by One Love Organics, but I also won’t go without using their Vitamin C serum either. I start with the Vitamin C, allow it to absorb for a minute and then top with the Skin Dew.
Here’s the part some people unfortunately skip. If you really want your makeup to last the entire day for an important event, primer is a must. You can get creative with this! I sometimes use a concealer on my eyelids and set it with setting powder to create my own eyelid primer when I’m out. Don’t skip out on foundation primer though. This will create smooth base for your foundation, bronzer, concealer and blush. Your skin type might also play a role here. If you’re prone to oil skin, you’ll want to look for a primer with a matte finish that will prevent your complexion from coming shiny throughout the day. If you’re prone to dry skin, look for a hydrating primer. Once you’ve applied your makeup, a setting spray will lock in all your hard work!
If you follow all of these steps, you really shouldn’t have to touch your makeup for at least several hours. Again, this is also very dependent on your skin type. If you’re prone to oily skin, we do recommend that you keep a setting powder on hand for small touchups. How long your lip color lasts will also depend on the formula you’re using. We all remember that famous Serena Van Der Woodsen quote “Lipstick lasts longer, but gloss is more fun.” She wasn’t wrong.
