The Term "Shade Matching" is SO Misleading
There’s No Such Thing as Just One Right Foundation Shade
At Shimmer, one of the most common things I hear from customers is: “Is this my exact shade?” And my answer is always the same—shade matching is an incredibly misleading concept. The idea that there is just one right foundation shade for each person ignores so many factors that go into how a foundation actually looks and works for you.
It’s More Than Just a Match
When we talk about finding the right foundation, it’s not just about getting an exact match to your skin tone. In reality, there are several things to consider:
Your Routine Matters – Do you use blush, bronzer, or contour? If so, your foundation doesn’t need to be a perfect match because your final look will have additional color dimension. A slightly lighter or darker foundation may actually blend better with your full routine.
Skin Tone Variations – Most people don’t have a completely uniform skin tone. Some areas of the face may be lighter or darker than others, and foundation choice can help even things out—or enhance natural variation if that’s your style.
Face vs. Neck vs. Chest – Some people find that their face is a different color than their neck, and their chest might be yet another shade. Which one should you match? It depends on your personal preference and the look you’re going for. Some people prefer to match their neck for a seamless transition, while others match their face or chest. The key is blending everything together so it looks cohesive.
Personal Preference – Some people like a brightening effect and opt for a shade slightly lighter than their natural tone, while others prefer a bit of warmth and go slightly deeper. Both choices are valid! Foundation should be about what you like, not just a technical match.
Seasonal Shifts – Skin tones change with the seasons. Many people find they need a lighter shade in the winter and a slightly deeper shade in the summer. Instead of trying to force one foundation to work year-round, it’s completely normal (and helpful!) to have different shades for different times of the year.
Hiding Redness - If redness is a concern for you, foundation shade selection plays a big role in how effectively it’s neutralized. Additionally, using a green-tinted primer or color corrector underneath your foundation can further neutralize redness and create a more even base.
Don’t Stress—We’ve Got You
We see it all the time—women standing an inch away from the mirror, hyper-analyzing every little detail of their foundation. Here’s a secret: no one sees you from that close! Step back, take in the full picture, and see how it looks from a normal viewing distance. That’s what really matters.
And if you’re still feeling unsure, that’s exactly where our makeup lessons come in. We’re here to help you navigate the options, figure out what works best for your routine, and make sure you feel confident in your choice. But at the end of the day, the decision is yours. If you like it, that’s all that counts!
The Bottom Line
Foundation isn’t about rules—it’s about what makes you feel good in your skin. So next time you’re debating between shades, don’t stress too much. Trust your instincts, think about your routine, and most importantly—wear what makes youfeel great!
