Deodorant detox

“Does this actually work?” This is a question we get asked a lot when it comes to natural deodorants. It’s a loaded question because sometimes a product that works for one person, may not work for someone else and everyone has different expectations of what a product is supposed to do. Let’s start by breaking down the difference between what conventional and natural deodorants do for the body.

Most conventional brands act as both a deodorant AND an antiperspirant. Ingredients like propylene glycol and aluminum stop the body’s natural process of sweating. That alone just doesn’t sound great for your body, never mind the links between aluminum and hormone disruptions and even cancer. Deodorants are what keep odor causing bacteria in check. Natural deodorants will give you the odor protection you need plus, some skin-loving benefits you’ll want.

Keep in mind, when you first make the switch, there will be a detox period. Your body will need time to adjust, but it will be worth it! You may sweat more than usual in the beginning as your glands begin to secrete the toxin build up. Don’t give up! It generally takes 2-3 weeks for you to tell if your new deodorant is right for you. Just like with other products, you may have to try a couple different natural brands before you find the one you really love.

Here are a few tips that will make the detox phase a little easier!

  1. You might need to reapply. Applying twice a day might just be the trick to making the switch more tolerable!

  2. Take hot baths to help open your pores and encourage sweating to help flush out the toxin buildup.

  3. Be willing to try different brands. Not everyone’s body chemistry is the same. What works for someone else, may not work for you. Hopefully you’ll find the right one on the first try! If not, don’t give up!

  4. Give it time! You won’t truly know If your new deodorant in the one for you until you’ve tried it for 2-3 weeks.

Good Luck, Everyone! Feel free to leave any questions in the comments or stop by Shimmer for more info!
