Get to Know Non-Nano Zinc Oxide

Not all SPFs are created equal. If you’ve been looking for the most effective and safest sun products, you’ve probably come across some popular buzzwords, but might not know what they actually mean. All of our sun products are made with non-nano zinc oxide as the active ingredient. Here’s why.

Non-nano Zinc Oxide is a physical particle that sits on the surface of the skin, rather than permeating it. Unlike chemical sunscreens, zinc reflects the suns rays instead of absorbing them. Zinc oxide is the best performing ingredient for blocking both UVA and UVB rays.

Nano comes from the Greek word “nanos” and means “dwarf.” The term “non-nano” refers to nanometers. One nanometre is one-billionth of a meter, meaning a nanoparticle is a particle smaller than 100 nanometers. Therefore, a non-nano particle is larger than 100 nanometers. Larger particles, better sun protection that won’t enter your bloodstream.

Oxybenzone — one of the most common active ingredients in chemical sunscreens — is a hormone disruptor, and it contributes to coral reef bleaching when it’s washed off in the ocean. It can also be irritating to the skin, especially if you have sensitive skin.

In short, non-nano zinc oxide is good for you and good for the planet. Scroll to shop our faves!
